It is not clear what caused the collapse of the structure. According to the newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano, a crack in the bridge was noticed in November following a wave of bad weather, but traffic was permitted to continue after a repair.
The incident occurred on Wednesday near Albiano in Massa Carrara province in Tuscany at a bridge connecting the provincial roads SP62 and SP70. Two vehicles were crossing the bridge at the moment it fell apart. According to preliminary reports from firefighters working at the site, one of the drivers crossing the bridge has been transported to a hospital with a light chest injury, while the other managed to escape unharmed.
