US COVID-19 Death Toll Surpasses 25,000 – Johns Hopkins

The US has surpassed a total of 25,000 deaths related to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus, maintaining its position as the country with the highest number of fatalities from the contagious disease.

According to the COVID-19 dashboard by Johns Hopkins, the US has at least 598,670 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and a total of 25,239 associated deaths. 

Some 44,364 cases have recovered from the novel coronavirus in the US and an estimated 2,973,208 tests have been performed nationwide. 

The state of New York alone accounts for 195,749 confirmed cases and 10,058 deaths from COVID-19. 

Cook County has reported 543 deaths from the novel coronavirus. 

Michigan’s Wayne County, which contains Detroit, has seen at least 11,648 COVID-19 cases and a total of 760 related deaths. 

The governors stressed in their joint release that their alliance does not signal a single timeline for reopening all three states, but instead commits to three shared principles: health of residents, attention to health outcomes and science rather than politics, and respect to borders as areas attempt to slow to spread of COVID-19. 

That same day, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo revealed that his state, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Delaware would be working together in an 18-member group to coordinate a reopening of their economies. 

It’s worth noting that all six governors involved in the East Coast’s pact are Democrats, while Massachusetts and Vermont, which have Republican governor, are not listed as members.
