In mid-September, Roscosmos said the exit into outer space would be performed from Poisk, a new module in the space station’s Russian segment. Before that, spacewalks were conducted from the Pirs module, which is due to be separated from the ISS and removed from orbit in 2021 to make space for another new module, Nauka.
Sputnik goes live from the International Space Station (ISS) as Russian cosmonauts, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov perform Spacewalk #47.
During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts are expected to carry out maintenance tasks on Russia’s Poisk, Zvezda, and Zarya modules and dismantle parts of a Soyuz spacecraft outside the ISS.
On Sunday, NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Soichi Noguchi from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) joined ISS Expedition 64. The astronauts arrived on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon, which lifted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
