The archipelago nation is located in a seismically active area in the Pacific known as the Ring of Fire that regularly suffers from powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, caused by the collision and destruction of lithospheric plates.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake hit 91 kilometres (57 miles) south-southeast of Blitar, with an epicentre located at a depth of 96 kilometres (over 59 miles). Initially, a magnitude of 6.8 was reported, but the number was later revised.
Lumajang district Vice Chief Indah Amperawati told the press that a woman riding a motorcycle was killed by falling rocks due to the tremor, and her husband was badly injured.
No tsunami alert has been issued by the authorities.
