First Indians Vaccinated Against COVID-19 After Government OKs Two Immunisers for Emergency Use

Last week, India carried out a a mock vaccination drill across 33 states and union territories. The country is currently the second-most-affected by the pandemic in terms of cases and has had the third-highest number of fatalities.

Sputnik is live from New Delhi as Indians are lining up to get the first vaccine shots as the nation has kicked off a nationwide vaccine roll-out.

Healthcare workers, police officers, military, municipal servants and senior citizens will be among those eligible to receive a Covishield or Covaxin shot.

The two vaccines received emergency use authorisation from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on 3 January.

Covishield was manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India and has been developed by Oxford, while Covaxin was developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech.
