The Latest: 2 women protesting attorney general are arrested

The Latest on Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ visit to Maine (all times local):

Police say two people were arrested while demonstrating during a visit by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to Portland, Maine.

All told, about 200 people gathered outside offices that house the U.S. attorney’s office on Friday. Most of those had dispersed by the time a smaller group blocked a garage entrance.

Lt. Robert Martin said two women, one from Maine, one from New York City, were arrested after they sat in front of the garage entrance and refused to leave. They’re charged with criminal trespass.

Sessions was in Maine to talk about the federal response to the epidemic of opioid addiction and overdose deaths.

Protesters criticized Trump administration policies including forced separations of families at the Mexican border.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions says a boost in federal law enforcement will reduce addiction and overdose deaths plaguing Maine.

Sessions was joined by Uttam Dhillon, the new acting director of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. attorney for Maine, Halsey Frank, on Friday in Portland as about 200 demonstrators gathered outside.

Sessions is in New England to talk about opioid addiction and overdose deaths.

He said Friday that about 64,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016, roughly the population of Portland, Maine’s largest city.

Sessions says that the drug crisis is a “top priority” for the administration and that together “we can break this vicious cycle of drug abuse, addiction and overdose” that has devastated families.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is calling for increasing law enforcement to address the regional opioid epidemic during a visit to Portland, Maine.

Sessions joined the U.S. attorney for Maine, Halsey Frank, on Friday as about 200 protested nearby. He spoke a day after speaking in Concord, New Hampshire.

Sessions announced Thursday that federal officials in eight states will prosecute every case involving the sale of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids regardless of the quantity involved.

Sessions praised Republican President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. Sessions said federal court judge Brett Kavanagh calls balls and strikes and doesn’t take sides.

Sessions said that the drug crisis is a “top priority” for the administration and that together “we can break this vicious cycle of drug abuse, addiction and overdose” that has devastated families.
